By William Shakespeare
Directed by Laura Standley, MCLA Professor of Theatre
Crime and depravity have spiraled out of control in Vienna, but when the Duke hands power over to the conservative hard-liner Angelo, the city takes a swift and draconian turn. When the young Claudio is sentenced to death for premarital sex, his sister Isabella, a novice nun, pleads for his life—only to face a harrowing ultimatum: sacrifice her own virtue to save him or let her brother die. As Isabella wrestles with this impossible choice, the disguised Duke plans a daring intervention that challenges the boundaries of justice and mercy. Shakespeare’s powerful critique of moral hypocrisy raises unsettling questions as it seeks to reveal deeper truths. Join MCLA Theatre for a bold and imaginative re-telling of this provocative classic.
