Today's seminar given by Nicolas Howe will focus on his book Landscapes of the Secular: Law, religion, and American sacred space that explores the intersection of law, religion, and the sacred in American landscapes. Howe examines how legal and religious disputes over sacred spaces have shaped the perception and experience of these spaces in America. The book discusses how the secularization of subjectivities and landscapes has led to complex legal, political, and cultural contests. It also delves into the history of Supreme Court cases that have addressed the legality of public religious monuments and the natural world's investment with sacrality by various religious groups. Howe's work challenges the common-sense approach to understanding the secular gaze and demonstrates that landscapes can possess agency and affect us in tangible, visceral ways.
