Physics Guest Speaker Dr. Brian Beckford: The Road Less Traveled and My Path in Physics

Join us with Physics guest speaker Dr. Brian Beckford, US Dept. of Energy Office of Science, Office of High Energy Physics. Dr. Beckford is an experimental Particle and Nuclear physicist. He will share his journey from an immigrant childhood in Miami to conducting experiments in Japan, reflecting on the challenges and opportunities of his career path.

Dr. Beckford is currently a Physicist (Program Manager) at the Dept. of Energy, Office of Science, Office of High Energy Physics overseeing the Intensity Frontier Research Program. In this role, he is responsible for leading the Intensity Frontier portfolio of experiments and steering a research frontier of discovery and innovation towards breakthroughs in knowledge that address pressing questions of our universe and places the US at the vanguard of global leadership in particle physics. His responsibilities include preparing, justifying, and supporting the portions of the Office’s budget relating to experimental particle physics intensity frontier measurements.

He has previously worked at the American Physical Society (APS) as the Bridge Program project manager, a program aimed at increasing the number of PhDs earned by Underrepresented Minorities (URMs). He also and served on the American Institute of Physics (AIP) TEAM-UP Taskforce. He has been awarded Univ. of Michigan Presidential Fellowship, and the 2020 Univ. of Michigan Science and Engineering Claudia Joan Alexander Trailblazer Award while an assistant Research Scientist at the University of Michigan.
